El sistema nervioso central (SNC) está formado por un complejo sistema de redes neuronales que nacen en el cerebro y se ramifican hasta la médula espinal. Cuando estas áreas están estructural o funcionalmente afectadas, se pueden desarrollar trastornos neurológicos y psiquiátricos, muchos de los cuales no tienen cura. Sin embargo, existen tratamientos para aliviar síntomas específicos, mejorar pronósticos y paliar complicaciones, con la esperanza de que los pacientes puedan recuperar su funcionalidad y mejorar su calidad de vida.

 ¿Por qué el SNC?

A pesar de controlar los principales síntomas, muchos pacientes con trastornos del SNC siguen presentando un importante número de necesidades no cubiertas. Esto es especialmente cierto en el caso de los trastornos psiquiátricos, en los que los síntomas suelen ser complejos y estar interrelacionados.

En Accord nos esforzamos en satisfacer las necesidades no cubiertas de los pacientes instaurando activamente tratamientos de apoyo para los trastornos psiquiátricos que van más allá de la observación de los síntomas de forma aislada. No existe un único método para tratar los síntomas en los pacientes con alteraciones en el SNC, puesto que las manifestaciones de estas pueden ser muy variadas.

Nuestro equipo de investigación y desarrollo se centra actualmente en ofrecer enfoques alternativos y personalizados para que los profesionales sanitarios puedan hacer mucho más por sus pacientes.

 La innovación en el punto de mira

Las enfermedades del SNC y, en particular, el área de salud mental, se están convirtiendo en el reto sanitario del siglo XXI. En la actualidad, al menos el 10 % de la población mundial está afectada por un trastorno de salud mental, una cifra que aumenta año tras año. Mientras tanto, el ritmo de desarrollo de nuevos fármacos para el SNC no ha aumentado en muchos años, a pesar de unos niveles de inversión sin precedentes.1
